The third issue of Gong! is dedicated to the illustrator and graphic designer Arnau Pi, linked to the Barcelona music scene, and especially electronic record Hivern Discs, for which it has created a strong image through their covers and posters.
Arnau has gone beyond the two previous numbers, transcending the order of play with the content and taking a step to exploring the same format Gong! The dimensions are the same as the two previous numbers, but Arnau wanted to use the monochrome printing press, which seeks the graphic and chromatic strength of the classic newspaper black and contrasting white, while highlighting the fragility of the printing and unstoppable degradation of ink and paper. On the other hand, it decided to replace the triptych containing the interview offset by a cardboard printed on letterpress that serve both the physical protection of the weak consistency of newsprint.
As for the content, Arnau claims the analog image in a series of abstract exercises based on the optical distortion made by using photocopies. In its execution and handling Arnau has made tools such as PhotoShop or Illustrator side, and has focused on the exclusive use of manual techniques perfectly possible two or three decades ago. Looking for the error, chance and observation, Arnau musters a series of images that plunge the viewer into organic landscapes and infinite that refer to the lysergic and psychedelic tradition.
The interview accompanying the release was conducted by John Talabot, musician, DJ and producer responsible for Hivern, with which Arnau Pi maintains a friendly and professional relationship since the two agreed on the defunct record label and music promoter Sinnamon, at the beginning of the century.
