Dews of the youth – Yoichi Nagano has been photographing teenagers living in regional islands in Japan throughout his career as his lifework. He has concurrently been picturing food photography for more than 10 years for his commission work for magazine ku:nel.
Due to massive popularization of social media such as blogs, food photography has become more close to us. But then, what is food photography?
Food photographs are, in its nature, to be presented not sorely but with supplementary information. Or, like commercial advertisements, they are normally carefully elaborated and arranged to look beautiful. Nagano’s food photography is, however, trying to picture the subject precisely as it is, and to light up the stories behind the food. Pouring natural lights and shadows casted by the subject, grains of a wooden table and kitchen wears used for a long time – Nagano’s photographs expose expressive face of food just like portrait photos.
If portraits in oil are meant to convey certain information to future generation as well as being artworks for appreciation, can a food photograph be a “portrait” too? This book deliciously asks you such a question.
