Issue 02 of SWIM celebrates all the work that gets lost during an artist’s creative process. Whether it be unfinished paintings, forgotten photographs, drafts that didn’t make the cut or rough ideas from the sketchbook, we’ve showcased it and shared the story behind it.
Nearly every aspect of the magazine follows this theme of abandoned work. The typefaces are all unused and unseen, with many only reaching a stage of half completion – either missing the upper or lower case. Rather than being lost to the designer’s archive, never to see the light of day, they have now found purpose within this issue.
Still following the theme, the cover is comprised of all the spreads from inside the magazine. Through displaying the interior on the exterior, what is unseen becomes seen, both literally and figuratively: The sharing of an artist’s unseen work, and the placement of that work, which is hidden from sight inside the publication, on the outside where it is in plain view.
Featured inside (and outside) is work from artists such as Sean Vegezzi, Frederike Helwig, Monty Kaplan, George Rouy, Tishk Barzanji and many more. This issue has given them a chance to revisit failed projects, rediscover lost work, and breathe new life into old ideas.
